Bike shops can be intimidating. They're showrooms of expensive merchandise — and clothing that looks good on 1 percent of the population — and the ultrafit salespeople are clearly pondering the 50-mile training ride they'll breeze through like an evening appetizer as soon as they clock out. Epic Bike and Sport is certainly serious about cycling. The store has a competitive racing team and sells high-end bikes that cost as much as something with a motor. But this sunny shop doesn't exude that fitter-than-thou vibe. The staff's expertise doesn't come with the smugness that often radiates from athletes with 0 percent body fat. In fact, the approachable crew hosts four weekly group rides, including a Monday night beginners' jaunt that draws a big crowd of eager rookies. Instead of catering to the already initiated, Epic works to expand the circle.
