Best Drag Shows
Bar Azul is a Mexican restaurant and bar by day, but on Saturday nights from 11 to midnight, the place turns fabuloso. Patrons pay $6 to gawk at the expert moves and stunning makeup jobs of Kansas City's best Latina drag queens, including Christina, 2009's Miss Gay Latina herself. Audience members are encouraged to approach the stage with dollar bills to tip their favorite ladies, who show their appreciation in creative ways. Host Sergio Chavez is like a cruise director amid a sea of Latin and American pop songs, filling the gaps between the divas' performances with rapid-fire banter that might make non-Spanish speakers want to bring a fluent friend. Gay or straight, Latin or not, all are welcome. When the show is over, the dance party begins, complete with flashing lights and a DJ until 2 in the morning.
