Midwest Music Foundation

In July 2008, when area musician Abigail Henderson was diagnosed with Stage III inflammatory breast cancer, her hope for survival was about as good as the U.S. health-care system getting fixed. Sixteen months of treatments and a White House regime change later, Henderson is not only free of the disease but is also on the board of directors for a nonprofit that aims to make life easier for folks like her: un- and underinsured musicians. Born out of the Apocalypse Meow benefit concert for Henderson at the end of last year, the Midwest Music Foundation wants to bring a shot in the arm to the local scene. Having gained its 501(c)3 status, it's working with a film producer on an Austin City Limits-style show that will feature live performances and bring awareness to the struggles of local musicians. The foundation is also planning such things as a health fair, more benefit shows and maybe even a musicians' clinic. Because getting sick should not cost musicians an arm and a leg.
