Best Performer in a MusicalNathan Granner
Who's Lerner & Loewe?Musical Theater Heritage He has operas to sing, classical CDs to cut, a company to run, and international gigs to perform as one of the American Tenors, so there's probably not much hope that Nathan Granner will become a regular in Kansas City musical theater. That's a shame. Taking on the pop songs of old Broadway, as he did in Musical Theater Heritage's estimable Who's Lerner & Loewe?, Garner kept his power in check even as it lent a commanding weight to each note. A ballad like Brigadoon's "The Heather on the Hill" stayed pop, but it came across more sturdy and sad than it usually does. Each syllable emerged as round, smooth and solid as a polished stone, less sung than sculpted in the media of voice and heartache — seriously, if that Crying Giant outside the Kemper Museum could sing, it would sound like this.
