Every so often, somebody comes along to challenge F. Scott Fitzgerald’s notion that there are no second acts in American lives. One of the latest to do so is Darius Rucker, erstwhile frontman of the once-beloved, frequently maligned Hootie and the Blowfish — while not officially disbanded, it announced last year that it will no longer make albums or tour. Proving that his appearance as a singing cowboy in that bizarre 2005 Burger King commercial was no fluke, Rucker recently embarked on an honest-to-goodness country music career. And, wouldn’t ya know, his rich, soulful voice works well in a more twangified (albeit still somewhat pop) setting. Rucker’s country debut, Learn to Live, has gone platinum and has spawned several hit singles; just a few weeks ago, he won the New Artist of the Year trophy at the Country Music Association awards (making him only the second African-American, after Charley Pride, to win anything at the CMAs). So far, act two is going rather well.
