President Reagan was known for his love of Jelly Beans. But he must have also loved his ice cream something fierce, because he designated the third Sunday of every July National Ice Cream Day.
To celebrate this momentous holiday, Merriam City is holding a Party in the Park this Sunday from 2-4 p.m. The park is Vavra Park at 60th and Slater. There will be games, music, a slide and of course, free ice cream.
A quick side note (and to cover up for the fact there's not much going on this weekend): None of the major ice cream chains like Cold Stone Creamery or Baskin-Robbins are doing anything special for National Ice Cream Day. That's not just unpatriotic, that's bad business. Baskin-Robbins even rubbed in customers' faces by acknowledging the holiday in an e-mail but not offering any discount:
The best way to celebrate National Ice Cream Day this July 20th is to head to America's favorite neighborhood ice cream shop and scoop up the fun. Whether you enjoy an ice cream cone or shake, there's an irresistible treat for everyone at Baskin-Robbins®. And with all our delicious flavors from Gold Medal Ribbon® to Pistachio Almond and everything in between, there's no better place to celebrate.
From writing about Baskin-Robbins before, I know that they closely follow what bloggers are saying about them. So I offer the following plea to Baskin-Robbins: Let us consumers know you really care about National Ice Cream Day by offering us a discount. Last year, it was a dollar off of sundaes. Something like that would be great.
End of side note.
If you like art and haven't been to the new addition at the Nelson-Atkins, they have a great happy hour Friday and Saturday night from 6-8 p.m. Of course, being arty, they don't call it a happy hour. They call it Cultural Cocktails and it's located in the Museum Café.
As they do every Saturday, two Gomers locations are having free wine tastings. The one at 9900 Holmes is from 12-3 and the one at201 North Hwy 291 in Lee's Summit is from 12-5.
Barring any update from Baskin-Robbins, that's it for the week.
