Yesterday Wowowow.com, the "Women of the Web" blog founded by Liz Smith, had a slideshow revealing what several of its famous contributors keep in their fridges.
Refrigerators are basically an entire closet full of guilty pleasures and eating habits. Smith keeps hers bare save for a bottle of gin and some Snickers bars (a byproduct of the hard-nosed, hard drinking days of journalism). Etiquette expert Judith Martin confirms her distance from reality by revealing that she keeps an actual ice-box in her house.
In that same spirit, I've taken a couple pictures of my refrigerator and tomorrow another Pitch employee (who may or may not be the food critic) will reveal what he keeps in his.
We're really doing this, though, because we want to see what you keep in your fridge and will be posting readers' submissions next week. Send photos to me at pitchforks@pitch.com and when you click on the blog next week, it could be like opening up the fridge at your own house.
But first, to get the ball rolling, here's mine.
Note One on Breyers' Reese's Peanut Buttercup Ice Cream: Do yourself a favor and stay as far away from this ice cream as you can. I normally don't have a problem putting down foods but the mixture of peanut butter and chocolate does me in every time. This ice cream also plays that trick that ice cream companies are so good at these days: Just when I'm about to say enough is enough, I'll stumble upon a large bite of actual Reese's that inspires me to keep eating. I'm about a week away from having to be on Intervention 'cause of this stuff.
Note Two on the 80 hot dogs: Just because Costco is having a big sale on hot dogs doesn't mean you should buy them. After I got home, I realized that if I just eat them at my normal pace of a hot dog every two weeks or so, these doggies should last me to the 2012 Olympics.
Note Three on the frozen meals: Loans and Michelina's Lean Gourmets are what got me through college. They only cost one buck, take two minutes to microwave and while they're not gut-filling, they will make the stomach growls disappear. The lasagna and five-cheese pizzas are the two I keep in heavy stock.
Note Four on the mustards: I am a mustard fiend and usually have four or five in stock (and no, I don't count yellow mustard). More than any other condiment, read the ingredient list when you're buying mustard. For traditional mustard, the first two ingredients will be vinegar and mustard seed. Some mustards, like Jack Daniels, are horseradish-based -- which isn't a bad thing, but they all taste different and the front label often isn't very helpful.
Note Five on the Dairy Products: I don't drink milk and limit my dairy intake, but I am not lactose-intolerant. I have a special fondness for cheese, including really crappy ones like cottage cheese and Velveeta. I also like cereal but since I don't drink milk, I usually mix it with yogurt instead. Still, the dairy seen here is enough to last me a month.
Note Six on Sodas: The diet soda is not mine and was leftover after a party. Behind it is several bottles of seltzer water which I use to mix with my home liquor of choice, Campari. When I have limes, I'll drink it plain with a spritz of lime juice. Closer inspection revealed that all the seltzer bottles had gone flat and I couldn't find any Campari on my shelves either. Liz Smith I am not.
