Considering how many other things at my parents' wedding were rentals, it's hard to believe that the cake wasn't too. There's a good chance that if they were getting married today that wouldn't be the case. That's because now, you can rent — yes, rent — wedding cakes. Really, it's the perfect invention for the lucrative wedding world.
The idea was first spread around the Internet last year but after the initial, "Golly, who'd get that?" reaction it turned out that a lot of people would. Cake Rental is the original Web site, but now it has competitors like Rent the Cake of Your Dreams.
It works like this: You order a specific amount of cake that's placed into the design and the rest is made of foam. Cake Rentals doesn't make any cake, just foam, so you have to still find a cake maker. It's inexpensive, and supposedly you're not able to tell the foam from the real cake (which I'm not sure is a good thing). It seems like if you're not keeping an eye on the cake it would be easy for Granny to make an accidental cut or young Bobby to stick his fingers in the side and get a really warped view of baking.
According to Bridal Association of America, the average wedding cake costs more than $500. The foam cakes are only $150.
Personally, I'm happy with those sheet cakes at Hen House.
