Where can we get a drink with our debate?

The first presidential debate is this Friday, or supposedly this Friday. Whatever. I planned on watching it at home or at a debate party (yes, I have nerdy friends who majored in political science) but then a co-worker asked whether I knew of any bars that would be showing the debate. Are there any?

Friday-night debates present a dilemma for bars. A lot of people go to bars to forget the drama of the week and blow off some steam, so they probably don't want to be reminded of the election. After all, 34 percent, or roughly 50 million eligible Americans, didn't vote in 2004. On the other hand, it is the first presidential debate and 64 percent of people did vote.

I called up eight bars in the downtown, midtown and Plaza areas that I thought might likely show the debates. Six said they had no plans to do so. 810 Zone on the Plaza said I could reserve a TV ahead of time. Only The Flying Saucer in the Power & Light District said it had plans to show the debate, which wasn't surprising considering its recent political promotion.

I'm sure other bars must be doing something debate-related Friday night. If you know of any e-mail me and I'll add them to this post. In the meantime, here's a first draft of a drinking game for the debate, with the warning: "DO NOT take a drink every time McCain says 'P.O.W.'"

How the hell am I supposed to get a buzz?

I'll be at the McKinney - Clemente watch party at the GranFalloon if you would like to join me.
