Is Artisan Francais Bakery closed?

Hey, I'm all for getting away for a petit vacance when there's an opportunity to take a little vacation time. But fans of Overland Park's Artisan Francais, A French Bakery are wondering whether the "vacation" that owners Sebastien and Brianna Saint-Ouen have taken from their business at 6759 West 119th Street might be permanent.

The phone number is still being answered by a recorded message that the owners are "on vacation until Sunday, October 26. Please come and see us on Monday, October 27." The phone service is no longer recording messages.

Several people have told me that the bakery did not reopen on October 27 and hasn't been open for some time. I drove out twice to see for myself -- during the listed business hours -- and the venue was closed and the pastry case empty. A stack of newspapers remained outside the front door. The bakery's Web site is no longer functioning, either.

I haven't had any luck reaching the owners, but I'm starting to think that there's a marzipan-flavored mystery here. Could the business be moving? Did it close forever? I'll split a chocolate eclair with the first reader who comes up with the answer.

No wonder they are closed. I have talked often with the owners. Bottom line the mentality of Johnson county had them failed and this johnson county' loss. When you have 4 customers sharing one eclair au chocolat or people coming only when they have coupons, or customers returning a half eaten pastrie for a refund or complaining about the price... No wonder a business can't survive. Again it shows what you people want: Quantity vs. quality. It is a shame, as for once your had in your town one of the best baker. Some of the pastries were of higher quality than what you could even find in France. Sebastien was trying to bring the best and he did. Most of his cusotmers couldn't and didn't know how to appreciate. Might as well stick with Price Shoppers. For all of you, did you know that just the oven he used cost $100,000. There was only one other like this in the USA, in NY. Next time you have such a gem in your town try to preserve it, and stop thinking quantity and Price Shoppers. Your loss.

Yes, the bakery has closed forever. Rumor has it that the owners skipped town and will file for bankruptcy.

Sadly, no mystery beyond the economy. Such an injustice in the world for my favorite bakery to close. Where else am I going to get pan au chocolate, chocolate almond croisants, sable breton and a variety of delicious breads.
