I was down in the Power & Light District and decided to stop by the Peachtree to see how it was coming along. I walked up the steps to the second-level restaurant and lo and behold learned I had stumbled upon its grand opening.

Well, grand is not the right word. "Soft opening," the hostess slightly scolded me. In any case, after months of delays, the Peachtree is finally open.

The main dining room is set up around a baby grand piano that's elevated in the far corner of the room. There will be live music every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. When there's not music, the windows overlooking the piano offer a great view of downtown and the rest of Power & Light District.

There's also a private dining room and the Martini Room, a private small circular room lined with couches, with a thick velvet curtain to seal off its patrons from the eyes of other customers. As one waiter joked to me, "Of course there will be no crazy things in the Martini Room. At least while the curtain's open."

All the soul-food mainstays one would expect of the Peachtree are still on the menu. The special southern fried chicken is $13, the Mississippi fried catfish is $14, as are the salmon croquettes. Golden fried tomato okra is $9. Deep fried shrimp is $15. While fried food is the specialty, there are non-fried items such as the Peachtree meatloaf and the crawfish etouffee for $12. Sides include favorites like candied yams and simmered fresh collard greens.

The Peachtree is located at the corner of the 14th and Main. The entrance is unmarked but you have to enter the doors immediately to the west of The Bristol and walk up a flight of stairs. (There's an elevator too.) Its phone number is 816-472-8733.

I agree with you Chimpo. They need to step it up for the Power & Light!

Awesome food. Slowest service ever. Can't wait to check out the new location.

Good news. I loved their food when it was at 18th and Vine. Anyone know what they did with the old sign?
