Please folks. I don't pull a Jerry Lewis and start slobbering and begging for something very much, but this time I need your help. Specifically, from the more serious beer drinkers out there.
Dan from Gone Mild alerted me to the fact that the Kansas City Bier Meisters homebrewing club might teach beer-judging classes in Kansas City. But! They need twenty people to sign up for the class. At the end of the course would be the difficult, prestigious Beer Judge Certification Program examination.
Graduates will not only be able to impress friends and drink free beer now and again, they may be asked to judge contests in other cities -- and get put up in hotels and basically be treated like beer royalty.
It's short notice but Dan needs commitments from people by the end of today.
I'm reprinting from Dan's blog below:
The class will be divided into 5 sessions on Sunday afternoons, probably around I-35 and Lamar, and will cost $30 per session. For an investment of $150, you can learn enough to be recognized as a real beer know-it-all, if you take and pass the exam. The exam will be a three hour, closed book exam divided into two portions (Written & Tasting):
Written Portion
- Ten essay questions, worth 70% of your total score (though I've heard that this might now be multiple-choice)
- One question on BJCP and basic brewing skills
- Four technical questions
- Five beer style questions
Tasting Portion
- Four exam beers, worth 30% of total score
- Judge beers as in competition, but no references
**Beers may be homebrew, commercial, blended, doctored, or mis-categorized.
If you're interested, slightly interested or have any questions please e-mail Dan today! For the record, I'm signing up.

One, you need to fix your link to Dan's email. Two, I'll give it a try. I've always said I have no interest in the work that goes into creating my own home brew, but judging...that is something I could enjoy.
