Dan over at Gone Mild latest post lays out case for why Kansas City should "bulldoze" Power & Light District.
Dan makes some good points but as one of the commenters (blogger Keith Sader) of the post says, "Since the Power & Flight [sic] district opened, douchebaggery has
declined by a huge amount in older, funner entertainment districts." In other words, Westport.
The resurgence of Westport has been on my mind of late.
In this week's Pitch, Charles Ferruzza wrote a great article
reviewing the state of Kansas City restaurants in 2008. To follow up
the article, I was going to review the nightlife scene for 2008. I
realized the best bar opening of 2008 took place in Westport with The Foundry (I didn't write this "best of" for The Foundry but I agree with it 100 percent), Harry's Bar & Tables had a resurgence and One80 in addition to making clever sandwich boards, is also doing some of the best small-plates in town.
In
addition to good bars, anybody whose been to Westport in the past six
months can just feel the vibe is different than a couple years ago.
Loitering underaged kids are essentially a thing of the past, one bar
isn't blasting its music above the rest and there's a noticable lack of
the "striped-shirt"
crowd. With Power & Light attracting the more fringe elements, the
artists and alternative college kids are back taking over Westport.
If
this trend continues then 2009 will be the year of Westport and (gulp)
it could become trendy enough to start attracting the fringe elements
back. Once that happens then who knows, maybe Power & Light becomes
the cool alternative place. Either way, it's going to be an interesting
2009 for nightlife.

Don't worry Meesha. Charles is still the food critic and he'll still be as biting and sharp as ever. Local restaurants better be careful what they wish for.
What I want to know is Charles Ferruzza still employed by this here paper, because if he is not I will protesting on the plaza after the palestinians clear out the protesting space.
Bring back Ferruzza!
