As already reported in Pitch Forks, the Kansas City, Missouri Central Library's Food For Thought series kicks off tonight with a speech by one of the preeminent pancake historians in the world (maybe the only pancake historian in the world), Ken Albala. He's also a pancake lover -- claiming that he hasn't missed a morning without a pancake for half a decade -- and a pretty good blogger.
All that pancake eating paid off. Albala is a professor at the University of the Pacific and has just published a book called Pancake: A Global History.
He discusses the flapjack tonight in a talk that promises to explains "the cultural importance of the pancake through human history -- from the Greek and Roman eras to the Middle Ages to present day."
There's a reception at 6 p.m. and the speech is at 6:30. Both are free, though RSVPs are appreciated.
