I used to work for a local brokerage branch of a property development firm, and one of our brokers was trying HARD to get TJ's to come to town. They won't do it because of the reason given by Judy above.
They want to open at least 2 stores (optimally 3), and stradle the state line, but because of Kansas liquor laws not allowing them to sell wine/beer in Kansas grocery stores, they can't do that.
Now that the liquor laws might be changing in Kansas, I wonder if theyll find a way to open here in KC. Guess we'll have to wait and see!
I've been discussing this with their corporate off and on for about 3 years now. Bottom line is, they're opening stores as fast as they can/care to, they have a very set demographic that they look for and we ain't it and "don't call us, we'll call you."
I asked if petitions or letter-writing (twittering, Facebook groups) had any bearing and the answer was a definite "no."
I think part of the problem is that they don't seem to 'get' the State Line opportunity. JoCo has the $$ but they can't sell wine there. They just need to go in on the east side of state line but they don't need our money so why bother? At this point I would be tempted to boycott them if they did come here. Their corporate arrogance has really rubbed me the wrong way and I have noticed a decline in their products in the SoCal and Chicagoland stores over the last few years.
