Now Open: The Pizza Oven

The Ferrel family couldn't have picked a more difficult time to open their little pizza parlor, Pizza Oven, in the stone strip center at 80th and State Line. The economy stinks and the national pizza chains keep cutting their prices.

But Kevin and Chris Ferrel are optimists. They leased a storefront that hasn't had a great track record: It was once occupied by two Philly cheese steak joints and, after that, a short-lived Asian restaurant. The Ferrels, who formerly operated Hallmark card stores, and their daughter Jessica gutted the space, poured a new concrete floor (which now features a very large painted pizza), installed a new kitchen and a dozen or so tables.

The restaurant, which offers both dine-in and carry-out service,

opened December 17. "We have no freezers here," says Jessica. "Everything's fresh, nothing's out of a can."

She says the restaurant's specialty is

personalized service: "We want to know all our customers by name."  A friend of mine who has eaten there twice laughed at that news, saying, "Well, they've never asked mine!"

Anyway, the Ferrels are proud of their product and the place is appealing,

although they're still working out a few kinks in the kitchen. I've

eaten a couple of the 6-inch pizzas offered during the lunch hour

(served with a dainty house salad with house-made dressings). They were

very good and the sandwiches are pretty tasty too. And the prices are

reasonable.

There's no tip jar at the counter and no tip line on the charge

slips, which should impress the tight-fisted crowd. And the Ferrels --

who couldn't be nicer -- didn't ask for my name either, which was OK

with me: I was there to eat, not to make new friends.

I ate there this week and I have mixed feelings about The Pizza Oven. About the pizza... the toppings are placed on top of the cheese. Without the cheese to hold the toppings on they were dropping everwhere. The crust was unique though. Not cracker thin and not quite hand-tossed. The slice would stay practically erect and not droop down which was nice. The sauce was OK. As for the facility...very small like a donut shop almost. The place reminded me of a medical clinic waiting room unfortunately. Maybe it'll be better when they get a liquor licence. B-

The pizza was really good, and the people were so nice! I get tired or waiting in crazy lines at Waldo Pizza (or waiting 2 hours for delivery), so the friendly service and good pizza was a welcome combination!

We just ordered a veggie pizza and cheese bread from the Pizza Oven. It was great, and the owner personally delivered it! We got the sense that they could use a bit more business, so we highly recommend it. Free delivery in Waldo!

We went to 'The Pizza Oven' the other night for an "Italiano" pizza and it was really pretty good...fresh ingredients for sure. The owners were friendly and the restaurant had a quaint feel to it. It did seem pretty quiet the night I was there but I'm hoping word of mouth will bring them more biz because it's definitely a place I would hate to see go away. I know we'll be going back again.
