Vegemite: Don't ban me mate!

Posted by Owen Morris on Thu, Feb 5, 2009 at 11:00 AM

I'm generously guessing that maybe 0000001 percent of the United States population eats Vegemite. Nevertheless, it caused an uproar when the U.S. nearly banned the yeast/salt spread in 2006. So imagine the outcry if the stuff were banned in Australia, which consumes the other 99.9999 percent. The population of Australia is just over 20 million people and in 2008 they ate more than 1.2 billion servings of Vegemite.

The Australian Food Council has warned Aussies it's considering a ban of Vegemite as a way to tackle the country's obesity problem. Also on the chopping block are cheeses, preserves and jellies. If you can spread it on toast the AFC wants to ban it.

The acting prime minster of Australia, Julia Gillard, tried to assure her country she would fight for the Vegemite. She's quoted in the Australian newspaper Crikey calling herself a "happy little Vegemite."

Yet there have been no riots or demonstrations. If Mayor Funkhouser were to ban barbecue there would be outrage, but Austrailians have shown none of that.

Australians don't seem to be taking the Vegemite ban seriously. They

also don't seem to be taking obesity seriously either. Right after the

AFC released its preliminary findings (actual suggestions are in the

summer) Australia's largest newspaper ran an editorial saying childhood obesity was a myth.

I don't know any Americans who can vouch for how salty Vegemite is

because every person I know whose tasted it said they took one bite and

spit it out. It's supposedly revolting but then again, that's the way

the French feel about peanut butter. The container says its made up of

five percent salt which is comparable to barbecue sauce.

If Vegemite was banned it would affect

America as much as Australia. Not in terms of spread choice but in terms of

money. Vegemite is a brand name and that name is owned by none other

than Kraft.

Ew. No. Don't do what Heather said. I used to date a boy who's mom was from Australia, and they always had Vegemite in the house. They finally convinced me to try it once. Its not the saltiness of it that hit me. It was the vileness...the flavor was like a rotten fish had been smeared on toast. That is NOT a good thing, and I don't get the attraction to it. Not one bit.

Now, the idea of banning all things that one might want to put on toast is effing ridiculous. Have the Aussies gone crazy?

Vegemite is good stuff. Stop into World Market and purchase a little jar and try it for yourself!
