Now Open: The Sweet Guy

The Sweet Guy bakery and confectionery shop was an off-the-beaten-path gem in Parkville. A little too off the path. "That's why we had to close it," said manager David Reid. Now, four months after shuttering the Parkville location, the Sweet Guy is back in business in a much more central location. It opened last Friday in the heart of Waldo at 7439 Broadway, between Waldo Pizza and Kokoro Maki House.

Reid said the restaurant was attracted to the new location because of familiar faces. "We looked at the Brookside area and here because most of our clientele came from those two places. We chose Waldo because the people from this area are very dedicated to the area. They like to shop here. They can walk here. There's lots of foot traffic. It's one of those family areas."

The Sweet Guy is a misleading name for a shop that sells a variety of products -- sweet and not.

When I asked owner Blake Matthews to sum up the store in a sentence, he

took a long pause. "Our main focus is an artisan chocolatier and

gelatoer that also does morning espressos and daily lunch with a full

professional kitchen. Does that sound right?" Reid added,

"Don't forget the pastries."

A

lot of the menu will be familiar to old customers, with the gelato and

chocolate sections gradually scaled up -- they hope to increase the current

24 flavors of gelato to 30 or 40. Another new edition is the kitchen and the food

menu. For lunch, there's a build-your-own salad ($6.95) with

a choice of four different types of lettuce and five

add-ins; and three sandwiches: a roasted turkey with cranberry apple salsa ($6.95), a

salmon BLT ($8.95), and a meatloaf sandwich with smashed potato ($6.95).

Hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week; the new phone number is 816-361-9500.

It seems the new location is so far "off the beaten path" that it doesn't have hot water!

Come on folks, can't you spot filth when you enter a restaurant? It seems that since the owner had made not so nice remarks about Parkville, that he was bitten by karma.

The new ice cream joint that's moving in where the Sweet Guy vacated in Parkville is likely to reclaim most, if not all of the customers that once patronized the Sweet Guy.

The story about the health violations can be found online at
