| Bonnie Winston and Zaina Saad bring out the feast. |
The dinner, which was attended by more than 200 people, was held in the basement of Community Christian Church. The meal was prepared by members of Kansas City's Iraqi community, overseen by my friend Bonnie Winston, one of the most talented chefs in town. "The food is incredible," Bonnie whispered to me before her volunteers began laying out, buffet-style, huge platters of dolmas, tabbouli, eggplant salad, onions stuffed with beef, chicken, rice biryani and a half-dozen other dishes that were all incredibly delicious. If only all church-basement suppers could be so good!

It was a meal of beauty and hope. Iraq War Vets leaning across the table to speak with Iraqis about how their country and lives had changed--together expressing their hopes for a change and a long lasting peace.
I've been to hundreds of events over the years and this one was truly amazing.
Charles is right, the food was marvelous! The ethnic dancing was fun too.

Thanks, Charles
I always enjoy your columns. I'm so glad you enjoyed the dinner. The food was made with love, pride, and hope by the Iraqi women. Sounds like you were open to being nourished by the intangibles as well as the food!
Thank you for helping the Iraqi refugees feel welcome in their new country by your attendance and words of praise for their cooking.
Blessings to you, Rosie Stoneking
