The most popular page on Facebook belongs to Barack Obama. That is not surprising. While campaigning, he asked people to friend him on Facebook.
But the second most popular page was started by a struggling actor in Los Angeles who just happens to love Coca-Cola but has zero ties to the company.
That actor, Dusty Zorg, has seen his Coca-Cola page swell to nearly 3.5 million members. It has become so large that Facebook asked Coke to moderate it for them because it was costing Facebook too much time to delete all the inappropriate comments and pictures.
That's when Coca-Cola called Zorg.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
"Coca-Cola wanted to make sure the page could continue to exist without
the company intruding on fans... The two sides have taken a
collaborative approach. A small group of
Coke employees, including [Michael] Donnelly, helps monitor the site.
They remove
obscenities and inappropriate photos."
Michael Donnelly is
better known on the Facebook page as admin "Mike from Coke" and his
full-time job is now deciding what stays or goes. "Every so often, for
example, someone posts 'I like Pepsi.' Those comments stay."
The
Atlanta Journal-Constitution posted a list of the 10 most popular
Facebook pages and of the top six spots, four involve either food or drink. In the third and fourth spots are the Italian
chocolate spread Nutella, with more than 3 million fans, followed by the
all-encompassing "pizza."
The
international appeal of the most popular products is evident from the
message walls. Currently the Coca-Cola page
has people writing in French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and other languages I am not even going to pretend to recognize.
People from every part of the globe can see what other people
are saying about the product. They might not be able to understand
every word but you don't need to speak Spanish to get the gist of
"ADORO!!!!!!! La Coca-Cola!"
Coca-Cola views it all as a "fan page" which is why they claim not to have contacted Zorg earlier. But with 3.5 million people all over the globe at beck and call, it won't be long until the company realizes a way to use this massive power.
