Folk it up at the drive through

Posted by Owen Morris on Thu, Apr 9, 2009 at 1:00 PM

Some of the first videos to go viral on YouTube were of teens rapping their orders at the drive through. The most famous is the "Big Mac" video, which has more than five million hits.

Most of the rappers weren't very good and there are only so many ways you can rhyme quarter-pounder. So the genre died off and was replaced in popularity by kids giving eulogies and biting their siblings.

But now drive-through singing is mounting a comeback, this time in the folk category. This video by comedic duo Rhett and Link (a very poor man's Flight of the Conchords) actually is catchy and, if it's real, pretty amazing.

I say "if" because the video is obviously a promotion for Taco Bell. Yet Rhett and Link claim that the drive-through employee did indeed get the order down with only a few small mistakes.

Not that I'm Martin Scorsese, but I've watched the video four times because the audio is clear, the camera doesn't shake and you can actually see the actors because it was filmed during the day. So to all the former drive-through rap auteurs, if you're going to film your own masterpiece, those are some good basics to start with. And then, who knows. Maybe you will be the next person promoting Taco Bell.

Thanks for posting this...I found it in a Rhett and Link google news search. I'm a fan of theirs and want to take a bit of an issue with your "very poor man's flight of the conchords" assessment. These guys have made 200 videos, 4 albums, 2 movies, and they've worked in network TV. And their music is quite good. If you'd check out the rest of their work, I'm sure you'd have a bit more kind way of referring to them. I really think these guys have monstrous potential and that their work needs to be recognized more.

Oh, and they're not "actors". They write, edit, and produce all their videos themselves...

But, at least you posted this, right? Any publicity is good publicity, I guess.
