For a long time, the rumor was that the next tenant of the corner space vacated by the ill-fated Beauchamp's on the Rail in downtown Lee's Summit would be an outpost of Governor Stumpy's, the popular Waldo neighborhood bar and grill. The Governor Stumpy's deal fell through, I guess, because the new restaurant to be opened in the space -- at 301 S.E. Douglas -- will be called Maxwell's Downtown Grill and is tentatively scheduled to open on May 1. Maxwell's will be operated by the owners of another Lee's Summit restaurant, Ciao Bella, at 235 S.E. Main Street.

Maxwell's Downtown Grill will serve "grill food" one of the employees told me. "Steaks and gourmet burgers." No barbecue, she stressed. "If any, very little. We don't want to be associated with the previous tenant."

So there.
