It is sad that the New York Times liquor blog Proof is closing shop after four months and 40 posts. It dealt with alcohol in serious ways (such as in its first post) but also with a sophisticated pizzazz.
Mimosas,
vodka tonics and frozen margaritas are my spring drinks and I bet there
are a lot of otherwise sophisticated drinkers out there who like them
too but don't order them because of the social implications. At a family gathering last summer I spent the day with a
cousin my age who I hadn't seen in several years. Always
quasi-rivals, we met at a bar that had wild-cherry margaritas on
special. I wanted to order one but didn't want my cousin to think of me as a light-liquor sort of guy. I ended up drinking beer instead.
Yes, it's
completely irrational but so is not ordering a drink for fear of what
people think. I have to remind myself of the same advice I give people who don't indulge in guilty pleasures: If a person is completely judging you by a drink, you don't want to know that person anyway. So loosen up this spring. Go ahead, man -- order the frozen
strawberry daiquiri. I
promise me and my mimosa won't smirk.
