Pizza Fusion celebrates Earth Week

Pizza Fusion's motto is "saving the Earth one pizza at a time," which the environmentally conscious chain is trying to accomplish by opening all over the Earth. There are even locations in the less-than-eco-friendly Saudi Arabia. (I suggest they stay away from Dubai all together.)

Back in the good ol' green USA, the paint is barely dry on its Leawood location at 4800 West 135th Street. But that's not preventing it from going all out for Earth Week, with five full days of festivities and prizes leading up to Earth Day on the 22nd.

Each of the five days has a theme. Check it:

  • Saturday, April 18: The first 100 kids who

pledge to "Go Organic," for Earth Day will get a free kid's pizza and

Honest Kids beverage. You can also enter to win a mountain bike.

  • Sunday, April 19: Specials on family-size offerings all day. Enter to win a green home makeover. Prizes include $100 gift certificate to Whole Foods.
  • Monday, April 20: Drive your hybrid, ride your bike, or take

public transportation and get a free personal cheese pizza and Honest

Tea beverage. Enter to win an adult bicycle.

  • Tuesday, April 21: Organic wine promotions all day. Enter to win a trip to a California winery.
  • Wednesday, April 22, Earth Day: Buy any large specialty pizza and

the restaurant will plant a tree in your name. It's also giving out free reusable tote bags, and selling Honest Tea drinks for

    $1.

Even if you're not that into Earth Day, Pizza Fusion offers many choices for vegans, vegetarians and people with food allergies (including a gluten-free pizza crust).

I was there today for the first time and had a wonderful experience. I met the owner or manager and was given a tour of all the eco-friendly initiatives they have going on in the restaurant. I received a free reusable grocery bag and was unexpectedly told that they plant a tree in every customers name today! So I have to say... it beats any grease-pit that can be accessed by public transportation.

Let's give them kudos for making more of an effort than I've EVER seen by a restaurant.

Oh don't worry Eric. There is a 50/50 chance I'll get run over on my bike but it'll all be worth it for a couple bucks off a pizza.

Oh the irony! This supposedly earth-friendly pizza joint is in a location where it is impossible to take public transit, as there is no bus service to 135th Street. And bicycling isn't much more of an option, as 135th Street is a giant traffic sewer.

If Pizza Fusion was really serious about saving the planet "one pizza at a time" then they would have located in a walkable and bikeable neighborhood with transit service. Essentially any place but southern Johnson County!
