An organic market is opening in Mission Farms, the new Leawood development that holds Zest and the Johnson County locations of Blue Koi, Blanc Burger & Bottles and Room 39. "It's a nice fit," Mission Farms marketing director Katie Chalfant told me. "There isn't a market in Leawood. There hasn't been since the one at Barstow, but that's been several years. And with our restaurants, a lot of which buy locally, it made sense."

Chalfant says the market is going to start "small but mighty," with around a dozen vendors, all of whom are certified organic or members of KC Food Circle Pledge or the equivalent. Not all the names are finalized yet, but among them are Foxfire Farm, which will serve sweet corn, and Schenker Family Farms, serving lamb, beef, and other meat. There will also be vendors selling produce, flowers, soap, bread, honey and dairy products, all under a covered patio. "It overlooks the lake and it's really a scenic area," Chalfant says.

The Mission Farms Farmers' Market will be open every Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. on the east side of the Mission Farms. It opens for the season on May 7.
