Against my better judgment, I'll sometimes thumb through Travel + Leisure magazine to get a better sense of all the exotic islands and wild destinations I'll never visit.
But Travel + Leisure has been making me mad. Like most magazines, it puts together annual lists ranking this or declaring the best of that. This month, it put together a list of the 50 best new restaurants in America and Kansas City was nowhere to be found.
No Justus Drugstore (I know it technically opened in 2007), no Extra Virgin, no Mandarinism. Nothing! Even more indefensible is leaving Kansas City off this article of the best baseball stadium food. Oh Kansas City is mentioned all right, but only in reference to the style of ribs served at the Mets' new ballpark.
But there is a way to get Travel + Leisure to notice us.
It's currently running a competition for America's Favorite Cities of 2009.
In addition to obvious places like Portland and Austin and Minneapolis, it's
asking readers to select which cities that are currently on the cusp should be included. There are 10 choices (nine if you don't count Detroit) and KC is one of them. Our
competition includes Houston, Memphis, Anchorage, Salt
Lake, Providence and (shudder) St. Louis.
USA Today already named us one of the five destinations to watch in 2009
so we should be lock for this one. (After all, one of the competitors
is Detroit!) But just to be sure, I'm begging friends of Fat City to click the link and
vote. It only takes a second and there is no signing in or giving Travel + Leisure any personal info or I wouldn't do it either.

"In addition to obvious places like Portland and Austin and Minneapolis..."
Have you ever lived in Austin? I have. See, I just don't get this assumption that it's "obvious." It's completely overrated. Especially for tourists. It shouldn't even be on the list, as San Antonio is practically down the street and already on the list. And Houston offers so much more... unfortunately ever since the media decided Austin was "hip" it's been over-represented everywhere. The same media that can never find anything redeeming about Houston... so mixed up. Well, I've LIVED both places. Austin even stole the Art Car Parade idea from Houston. How is that "hip"? I don't know that I'd say Minneapolis is an obvious either. Or even Portland, while we're at it.
We don't have anything close to the best stadium food. Thus far, I have found most of the new additions to be awful. The hot dogs even seem to be ruined.
