Happy Earth Day everyone! (I assume most readers do live on earth.)
Here's how various organizations and restaurants around the city are celebrating:
The Power & Light District gets into the spirit with "Green to the Core," an informational gathering from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at KC Live in the center of the district. The first 500 people get free energy-efficient light bulbs (or CFLs
as they're officially called). There will also
be live music and more than informational 25 booths.
"Olathe Celebrates
Earth Day" is
a business-themed event where people can shred paper, recycle
ink and toner and get rid of old computers and electronics for a minor
fee. Hy-Vee will be
grilling burgers from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $5 a person and offering
tote-bags for $1. (First tote mention.) The event lasts until 4 p.m.
and is at the Corporate Ridge Office Park at Ridgeview and K-10.
And what better way to appreciate the finest Earth has to offer than with Pee-wee Herman? In his classic movie Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Pee-wee's macguffin is his lost bike. To celebrate Pee-wee's devotion to biking, the UMKC group Clean Commute holds a bike-in movie (get it, like a drive-in but with bikes) on UMKC's
campus, specifically "The Hub" at 5301 Charlotte. The free screening starts at 8:15 p.m. and includes free food and door prizes.
Wine
at 112 W. 63rd Street in Brookside hosts an Earth
Day/spring open house from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today with an educational wine tasting
about organic wine and farming practices. Bring in six or
more unbroken glass wine bottles and receive 10 percent off on purchases. Wine also wants your non-synthetic corks. Cork makers have finally started to recycle them and they remain more environmentally friendly
than screw-off caps and synthetic corks. For every non-synthetic cork
you bring in (up to 100
corks),
Wine will take an additional 10 cents off your purchase. Finally in
honor of the holiday, Wine has revealed new reusable wine-bags (second
tote mention).
Pizza Fusion (4800 West 135th Street) finishes off its five days of celebrations by planting a tree for every pizza sold today. Also, with every pizza ordered you get a free tote-bag (third mention!).
To recap: This week we've gone from toking on Monday to toting on Wednesday. Enjoy and be nice to the planet.
