10 things celebrity chefs won't tell you

While fame seemed to come accidentally to Julia Child and Jeff Smith, today's celebrity chefs court it relentlessly which is why I distrust most of them. The magazine Smart Money does too, and has put together a list of things these star "chefs" don't want you to know.

Many of these personalities are not in fact chefs. Rachael Ray makes no bones about this but neither is Nigella Lawson, Paula Deen or Dave Lieberman.

Instead, many personalities are chosen based on their sex-appeal. This isn't a surprise to anyone who has watched more than a minute of Giada De Laurentiis' show. She's talented but it also helps that she has model looks. Padma Lakshmi is another example -- she went from Star Trek to discussing the merits of a dish with the most talented chefs in the country.

It's definitely worth checking out Smart Money's list before you run out and buy any personality's cookbook.

Bogus and badly researched article.
"3. Just because I have a cooking show doesnt mean Im a chef.
This item lists Ming Tsai, Mario Batali, and Sara Moulton. All are talented and trained chefs. Batali is a James Beard winner.

"4. Sex sells, even with foodies.
Actress and model Padma Lakshmi, for one, has gone from guest-starring on Star Trek: Enterprise to hosting the popular reality show Top Chef."

Actually Ms. Lakshmi wrote her first (award-winning) cookbook and hosted her own show on Food Network before signing on to Top Chef. She has never claimed to be a professional chef, just a lover of food who has traveled the world eating it and cooking it (and her cookbook has delicious and creative recipes...).

Giada De Laurentiis looks like a large-headed Natalie Portman. Exactly like somebody wearing an enormous paper mache Natalie Portman head for Mardi Gras or something.

I've never even pretended to be a chef - they have to work too damn hard. I'm just some guy whose mom and grandma taught him to cook.

I've only cooked professionally once - a two-month stint at a BigBoy in Tulsa in '71. That cured me of wanting to cook professionally.

But I'm glad somebody does it - it would suck to have to eat my own cooking ALL the time.
