Kansas City somehow trails Cleveland, Houston, three other shitty cities for favorite

Posted by Owen Morris on Thu, May 14, 2009 at 10:30 AM

Last month, I posted a piece about how Kansas City is one of the ten finalists for Travel + Leisure's list of America's favorite cities. My mission was to get Kansas City voted into the top five, thus guaranteeing it a spot in the magazine.

To be honest, I wasn't that worried about the voting. After all, with cities like Detroit on the list, KC looked to be a sure thing.

Not anymore.

Our City of Fountains currently sits at number six.

According to a senior editor at the magazine, only a "handful of votes" separates St. Louis, Kansas City and Baltimore for fifth. Houston,

Memphis, Cleveland and Providence seemingly hold a lock on the top four. Yes, Cleveland, where the locals love the city so much they have adopted the unofficial motto "At least we're not Detroit":

To ensure that we don't sit at the uncool-kids lunch table with Detroit, Anchorage and Salt Lake City, cast a vote at Travel + Leisure's Web site. It really only takes a few seconds, it doesn't require any personal information and you can vote repeatedly.

The poll closes at midnight this Friday.

Having lived in KC for a few years, although I won't go so far as to say it's shitty, it is a town lacking in confidence. I never met so many people that were almost apologetic about how little KC has to offer as I did when I lived there.

KC is really not a bad town per se (like you care what my opinion is, I know), although also having lived in Houston for a number of years, it is considerably less shitty than KC...sorry. If for no other reasons the weather in KC sucks ass..hot in the summer, cold in the winter. Don't tell me about the rest of the year and how nice it is because that does not make up for the crappy winters..and they are crappy. Houston's winters more than make up for hot summers..there's a reason people move to Florida when they retire and not Olathe.

I hope you at least beat out Cleveland...that city is definitely shitty..

Um... can't speak much for the others but Houston and Providence are not "shitty". You must be on crack to think that. Providence is small, but that's the only major thing against it. Houston should have been on the list all along as the state's largest and country's 4th largest city... like any big city it may have some problems but it also has a top-ranked restaurant scene (according to Forbes and others), the 2nd largest theatre district after NYC, one of the largest museum districts, world-class performing arts, the world's largest medical center, and nearby beaches and water recreation. Obviously you don't know much about these two cities... don't knock what you don't know.
