Having a truly happy Happy Hour

KC Beer Blog has brought up an interesting subject that doesn't get enough attention: happy hours.

Yes, Fat City tries its darn-tootingnest to highlight all the best happy hours in town but there are many restaurants we never talk about because their happy hours leave lots to be desired. By following KC Beer Blog's seven rules to a great happy hour, they could be on their way to more business. Rule number one, for example, states that happy hours should be at least three hours long. Shorter than that and restaurants are just limiting the good times. Rule number four:

Make it easy to take advantage of the happy hour, people are coming and

going constantly so you don't want it to be complicated. Buy X get Y

for 1/2 price is annoying, just give us Y for 1/2 price. The goal is to

get people to drink in your place, not get them to buy something you're

not willing to discount.

I tried to find a happy hour that fits all seven rules and I came close.

Westport Flea Market doesn't hit all seven categories at once, but it

offers all sorts of deals every night through the week. Monday through

Friday from 3-6 p.m. (passes rule one) it offers $1.25 cans of Pabst

Blue Ribbon and $2.25 domestic beers. That passes rule two (drinks should be single-serving as opposed to bottles of wine or spirits) and is very close to passing rule three (PBR cans should be $1).

Sunday night's rehab special fulfills the aforementioned rule four and rule five (make food really cheap) with its half-priced alcohol and burgers from 8-11 p.m. Plus Tuesday has happy hour prices all night long with two mini-burgers for the price of one.

The staff at the Westport Flea Market is always friendly and prompt (rule six: good service) and nearly all of the above information was available through its Web site and other social media pages (rule seven: publicize happy hour).

I'm also going to add rule number eight: Any bar with a

good happy hour should also feature a good reverse happy hour so that

people who ended up staying throughout the night can begin it like they

finished it. Westport Flea Market features a reverse happy hour with

the same specials from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.

What other restaurant hits all eight rules?
