The mysteries of Grape Nuts

Posted by Owen Morris on Wed, Jun 3, 2009 at 12:15 PM

There is no cereal more disappointing when you're a kid than Grape Nuts. The commercials show attractive young adults running, working, driving big cars and talking about how it keeps them going. Plus it has the words grape (yum) and nut (double-yum) in the name, so it has to be good.

I should have known I was in for disappointment the first time I ever saw it at my grandparents' house. That should have been my first clue -- they couldn't run, didn't work and barely drove. I poured a big bowl of it. I don't really remember anything else except maybe crying and wondering if there had been a mistake.

I never ate them again. And today when I see Grape Nuts, I am terrified by their similarity in appearance to dry cat food. Seriously:

I am not the only one.

The Wall Street Journal did a big story on the cereal

essentially saying no one under 95 buys it anymore and that the only

reason people ever bought it in the first place was because of good

commercials. As one former brand manager put it, it "was people eating

advertising."

Advertising probably explains the outrageous name, too (how can the FDA go after Cheerios for false advertising claims

and leave Grape Nuts alone?), but who knows. C.W

Post committed suicide before anybody thought to ask. "Mr. Post may

have called it grape sugar, or thought Grape Nuts looked

like grape seeds, or that grape seeds looked like nuts, or that malted

barley tasted nutty. Nobody seems to know."

The naming story left me just as unsatisfied as the cereal itself, as did the

answer to what Grape Nuts are actually made of. The official answer from the company is

...bread. Just bread.

Give me the cat food instead. (That would be the bowl on the left.)

(I love how the comments on this post seemed to make people want to qualify that even though they enjoy Grape Nuts, they aren't actually 95 years old. Hahahaha!)

Grape Nuts are much better in combination with another cereal, like a flake for example. It adds much need fiber and crunch. Also, as Faith said, they are delicious on yogurt.

Grape Nuts taste awesome with yogurt and/or bananas. It's one of the few things I can stomach eating in the morning (30F from KCMO).

I actually loved Grape Nuts as a kid. Not as much as Fruity Pebbles or Cinnamon Life, of course, but I liked letting them get soggy before eating them. They're also delicious heated up with a bit of honey. I'm only 30. Maybe this makes me an old man, but I can't help it.

Ever eat a pine tree? Many parts are edible

Oh man, I have always LOVED grape nuts. They're super crunchy at the beginning, but once the milk starts to soak into them, their consistency changes completely. It's like you're eating another completely different substance.

(Of course, this is just more evidence that I am in fact a 90 year old man at heart. I am under 40 and play bridge, after all. And I moved to Florida.)

I don't know, guys...I remember years ago when I used to put Grape Nuts on my yogurt, and the combo was always a tasty, crunchy, satisfying one to me.

It was the only way I would eat them, though. Interesting to know that it's essentially just little crunchy-until-they-come-into-contact-with-milk balls of bread. Although, let's cosider that point...what cereal isn't?

Grape Nuts BLOW. I don't think I've ever had worse cereal. There are dozens of other choices that taste better and are better for you.
