Anyone who has been to Opie's Barbecue in Spicewood, Texas near Austin would tell you that place gives any place in KC a run for it's BBQ money. Their dry run doesn't need any of the heavy KC sauces to make your mouth water.....And, heck, I'd go to Opie's for the pinto beans alone..
As long as we all agree that KC is THE BEST BBQ IN THE WORLD. I love oklahoma joe's, but there are plenty more BBQ joints worth finding.
Actually, my spouse worked at Jackstack for a long time, and they rarely microwaved their beans, plus they had warmers for the meat. In fact, they used the drippings from the meat to slow cook the beans. So, it wasn't necessary to microwave any of it. Jackstack is a quality BBQ restaurant in KC, and so is Okie Joe's. Nothing beats the Cheesy corn! :-)
Eff Jackstack! Sure, they have the best beans in the world, but they heat them until they're lava hot in the *microwave*! Sure, those crown ribs are some of the most tender, juicy and delicious barbecue I've ever encountered, but they are also microwaved! One of my best friends worked there and said they microwave 95% of the food that leaves their kitchens. They used to be my favorite, but having been a line cook and a chef for over 10 years, I hereby call that disgusting and lame. Down with microwaves!
Personally I think Bourdain isn't educated enough to make that call. Oaklahoma Joe's is bland, nearly smokeless in flavor and requires heavy saucing. I admit I haven't had LC's, but there are some 190 BBQ joints in Kansas City. Authur Bryants' beef isn't bad, but their sauce is awful. There's something wrong with actually SEEING the spices floating through the sauce there is SO much. Jackstack is nearest the top for me, but definately no cigar. Nobody can smoke long enough or properly, because they give that up just to meet sales. Rosdale the same. Smoking is one thing but braising is another.
LC's?? Well, I guess you are entitled to your opinion. I found LC's to be a complete let down. Sauce bad. Ribs lacked a nice top layer of meat, but did not lack fat.
I have also moved away from KC. I did like Joe's and Rosedale a lot. But, for my money and tastebuds, nothing beat A Bryant's pork, brisket, or burnt ends in Rich and Spicy sauce only.
I went to Oklahoma Joe's almost weekly while in KC. Then, just about a month before I moved away, I finally tried L.C.'s, and it outdid even Okie Joe's. And now, in Florida, man do I miss both of them.
So am I correct in assuming this endorsement will not shorten the lines?
Here's the secret to Okie Joe's, from someone who lives less than a mile away and has eaten their food literally hundreds of times:
You don't have to stand in line if you don't eat it there. Call your order in and you go right to the counter and pick it up, no waiting, no fuss. If the weather's nice, go north on Mission Road to Rosedale Park (it will be on the left, maybe half a mile) and have a BBQ picnic.
The best part is all the dirty looks you get from the poor bastards standing in a 45-minute line.
