What would be the official theme song for National Cheese Day? Nirvana's "Big Cheese"? Frank Zappa's "The Voice of Cheese"? "Mice Eat Cheese" by Modest Mouse? "Wet Cheese Delirium" by Gong? Or this musical madness, ( I also tried to think of some TV commercial jingles for cheese -- did Velveeta have a theme song? -- but it was too early to reach that far back into the recesses of my pop culture memory banks).
Today is not a good day to watch filmmaker Daniel Hsia's very, very short documentary titled I Hate Cheese because National Cheese Day is a celebration of the lovely, fattening, delectable delicacy.
So, in honor of National Cheese Day, I went to pay homage at one of the best places to find great cheese in Kansas City: The Better Cheddar store at 604 W. 48th Street on the Country Club Plaza. You can taste tiny samples of the many different cheeses sold here and the friendly staff is happy to tell you everything they know about the products as they encourage you to buy something sensational and expensive, like the itsy-bitsy little round of Weston, Missouri's Green Dirt Farm's Dirt Lover sheep's milk cheese ($14 for about ten bites, but well worth it). Green Dirt Farm is hosting a variety of events this month, including a Homestead Cheese-Making Class on June 14th (for those who want to make their own fresh ricotta) and a Cheese Appreciation on June 27th. Click on this link for more information about the farm and the upcoming events.
