Opening Soon: Matchstick BBQ

Fans of "Restaurant Row" on 39th Street who have wanted an exclusively barbecue restaurant in the neighborhood will probably thrilled when restaurateur Tommy Treccariche opens Matchstick Barbecue later this summer in the former Spitfire Wine Bar & Grill location at 1809 West 39th Street.

According to real estate maven Greg Patterson, who negotiated the deal, Treccarciche -- who has a background in the meat business -- and his partners saw a niche on 39th Street for an intimate bistro that served both barbecue and breakfasts: the breakfast trade has been slim on this stretch since Bell Street Mama's -- now Mama's 39th Street Diner -- moved to the eastern border of the neighborhood, to the old Nichol's Lunch location.

The owners of Matchstick, according to Patterson, will put a smoker at the back of the building and offer smoked meats -- including unusual game, like elk -- and barbecue breakfasts.

My wife and I stopped in for dinner. We heard things in the neighborhood and decided to stop by.
The waiter, when he wasn't to busy on the computer or playing with his phone, decided to serve us. The food took forever ( nobody else was in there). The waiter must have a dog or cat or both, because it looked like he was wearing a fur coat.
The food was great, but the service and staff are really going to hurt that place.

Foodie says two thumbs up for Matchstick. The Tommy Gun sandwich I had for lunch features 1 lbs. of beef brisket tucked in between three slices of soft texas toast. It really hit the spot when I was craving a bunch o' brisket. I was also impressed that the fries were hand cut.

DO NOT miss out on the homemade ice cream they make every week. The flavors change often but they are all made with real cream . . .I enjoyed the lime kiwi ice cream immensely.

Manager, Seth Morris and Pitmaster, Tommy Treccariche along with partner Brett Conner are all doing a bang-up job at Matchstick.

Service is not where it needs to be, but they appear to be working on the issue.

I cannot wait to get in there to try their breakfast.

My boyfriend and I went down for breakfast twice last week. The pancakes are amazing!!The meals are healthy portions at an unbeatable price. Hands down, the best breakfast in Midtown.

I live in the Volker neighborhood. I was excited to hear that breakfast was returning to 39th street. Ive stopped in several times for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food is excellent, the service was perfect, and the prices cant be beat. The specials are amazing and change daily. Thanks Guys, and welcome to the neighborhood!

I stopped by Matchstick for an amazing burger for supper on opening day. I was able to avoid the huge lunch rush that way. The food was out of this world. And the service was wonderful.

I ate there a couple of weeks after they first opened and was pretty impressed with my burnt end sandwich. I work on 39th street so its great to have a bbq place on the street now. The service was pretty slow... but if ANYONE knows ANYTHING about the restauraunt business, you know that service is usually pretty awful upon opening. First time eating there? Unfamiliar with the menu? So are the employees BBQ Fan. You missed out on some good eating. I hope it stays open.

I tried Matchstick for breakfast on a Saturday morning and am definitely coming back soon! I ordered the morning special, which was a perfect portion of food for a great price. It was nice to be served a delicious meal for a reasonable value. Plus, you can't beat the location on 39th Street!

I tried the matchstick on the first Friday open. Then smoked meats are excellent, and everyone should definitely try the roasted red pepper salsa. With such a small group of employees, i can see the hassle at lunch on a Friday, but when they get it all figured out, it shall be better than imaginable. I am sure there will be a line out the door of people waiting to get in this wonderful restaurant in the near future.

Yeah, I was excited to try this place until I waited for an HOUR at lunchtime with no food. Horrible service, and manager seemed clueless. I would have loved to have eaten some BBQ but we left to find something after we were ignored.

I've had Tommy's barbecue before, and it is absolutely unmatched and a completely unique style to Kansas City. He's catered very large events in KC, and championed competitions as well. I am ecstatic to see him put this place together, and I tell ya, the competition better not take this one lightly. My money says he'll give them all a run for the money. Good Luck Tommy and partners!(Cook some of that Italian food too Tommy!)
