After 15 years of working in restaurants all over the country, Caliente Grille's co-owner Patrice Seeger was more than ready to open her own place.
Thus Caliente Grille was born in the 39th Street space formerly occupied by Pangea Cafe. This past Friday was its soft opening; it's now open for business Monday through Saturday.
Seeger has worked in many types of restaurants, including Mexican ones such as Los Corrals, Tortilla Flats and Dos Hombres, gaining experience she will use as a hands-on owner. After deciding she wanted to open a restaurant, she looked all over Kansas City -- especially the Northland where she lives -- but knew this space was right upon first seeing it. "We fell in love with it. It felt right. You know when you just see a place and realize, 'this is it,' it was like that."
Seeger says she wants to be a neighborhood-style Mexican place and the menu reflects that.
It offers up all the usual Mex dishes such as tacos, burritos, fajitas and enchiladas, in either combos or a la carte. Seeger also serves four different types of chimichangas, including a
vegetarian option. And there's a different special each day of the week (on Wednesdays, for example, those chimichangas are $5.99 instead of the usual $8 to
$9.50).
$2.25 well drinks and $2.95 Mexican beers.
Caliente
Grille is located at 900 W. 39th Street (816-561-0900) and is open Monday-Thursday from
11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until 11 p.m.

Nice information, many thanks to the author. It is incomprehensible to me now, but in general, the usefulness and significance is overwhelming. Thanks again and good luck!
We went there for lunch. The food had a great taste to it. I say it's better than the other mexican restaurants.
My favorite thing on their menu is their chile rellenos, which are only available a la carte. The last time I had chile rellenos this good was at a place on SW Blvd that closed years ago. While we still mourn Pangea, my hubby and I are big fans of Caliente Grille. He likes the chicken breast with the spinach/cheese sauce. And what can I say, the mango margaritas are addicting! I hope they continue to do well.
This wonderful restaurant is in no way connected with "Caliente" at the Legends, it's Mexican not Cuban. The food is great-some of the best tacos and enchiladas I have ever eaten. The chips and sauce are delicious. There is a lot of garlic and just the right amount of heat. Service is great, meal presentation is a work of art, and the surroundings are very open and light. What a great place for lunch or dinner. I couldn't improve it if I tried. Very reasonable price in addition to everything else.
This is a great place! Their specials are wonderful and their happy hour has some great deals. This is definitely one place I eat at once a week.
I haven't been there yet but I met Patrice about a month ago & plan to come in there soon! I wish Patrice & the restaurant all the best & see ya soon!
I came here on a rainy Saturday afternoon for lunch with a friend. The food was great! I had a chicken taco and a pork tamale that was bursting with flavor. The chef even whipped up some extra spicy salsa for me, that was perfect for my spicy palate. I will be going here again, and again. I assure you, you won't be disappointed either. Try it!
We are delighted that this place has re-opened as a tex mex restaurant! We work in the area and have been in there several times in the last couple of weeks. They have awesome happy hour specials and BOGO lunch specials that are $5 or less. They have great customer service and yummy salsa! Check it out for a quick bite or a happy hour!
It's different. That jackass was doing a Cuban-themed place, and I think it was short-lived enough and far away enough so as not to be confused.
Seriously, though--that place was one of the worst restaurant experiences ever. What a train wreck.
I hope this place finds an audience. The location will be the hardest thing to overcome, IMHO.
It sounds good... unless one of the co-owners is Kerry Duffin who opened Caliente out at Legends. He's been threatening to pull his scam off with another Caliente restraunt somewhere in town. I sure hope Caliente Grill is not the same Caliente because if Kerry is involved it WILL go down quick and Kerry Duffin will walk away once again with a fatter wallet and ripped off partners... Might want to consider a name change. Good luck!
