A packed week of urban farming events, such as special dinners last night and numerous classes this past weekend, is just a precursor to the actual Urban Farms and Garden Tour this Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Although seven hours may seem like a long time, it's not nearly enough to participate in and see all the sites on this year's tour. There are 30 locations, from the hives at Ambrose Bee Pharm (8000 Oldham Road) to New Roots for Refugees (N. 1st Street & Richmond Avenue, KCK) which provides farming support to people from Burma, Somalia and Sudan, among others.

There are gardens at schools such as Benjamin Banneker Charter Academy (6401 Rockhill Rd.), and chicken coops hidden in the heart of the city at Hoop Dog Garden (3314 Troost) and a sculpture garden with edible herbs at Herb'n Gardener (921 W. 17th Street).

In addition, many of the sites will have speakers and demonstrations throughout the afternoon. Johnson County Community College culinary students will be on hand at Blue Door Farm (3830 N. 55th Street, KCK), while Drumm Farm Garden (3210 S. Lee's Summit Rd., Independence) hosts culinary students from Arts International.

A complete list of events is available at the tour's Web site, along with a map of all the participating locations. Tickets for the self-directed

tour are $5 per individual or $12 for a family (one or two parents and

kids), available at BrownPaperTickets.com.

Tonight the Urban Youth Center (2740 Troost) hosts a talk called "Generation G: Growing Youth Gardeners." The free discussion is from 6-8 p.m.
