Recession Relief: Stables Bar & Grill

Last week, an astute reader e-mailed Fat City with an idea we'll call the Change Pub Crawl. The idea is to see how long and how far you can drink using only as many quarters as you can fit in your pants pockets. When you run out of quarters, you stop drinking.

The perfect for starting such an endeavor is Stables Bar and Grill, downtown at 813 Walnut. As we mentioned in last week's dining newsletter Pitch Forks, the bar is now open Saturdays until 1:30 a.m., but it's during the week when things get exciting. Stables offers a happy hour that "cheap" doesn't begin to describe. The beer specials are good -- domestic beer is $1.25 for a mug and $1.75 for a pint -- but the well drink special is extra great.

Not only are all well drinks mark
ed down to $2.75, but they're two-for-one. That's two well drinks for under three bucks!

It gets better. While the special was originally only two hours long, from 4-6 p.m., since Pitch Forks went out, Stables has extended its happy hour until 7 p.m. That's three hours of incredibly cheap drinking each and every weeknight.

At those rates, you could go all night and still have a quarter or two still in your pocket.

I am a huge fan of Stables. The drinks are cheap and surprisingly tasty. Try them out, you might be surprised at how good and low priced their drinks are.

Bull for better or worse (worse) old guys are starting to be replaced by hipsters at the bar. It's worth another visit just to check in how much the clientele has changed. I never went before the smoking ban but even in the two years since, there has been a noticeable difference. Plus, those are damn dirt-cheap prices.

There are the regular old guys that pretty much live at the stables, but I will have to disagree that the average age is 70. I have been in there a few times and actually I have noticed allot of young professional types. I have had there tacos, Chicago style chili dog and chicken strips. I was told they have a new cook. I dont go in there during the day but at night its a very downtown trendy crowd. I like it a friend of mine had her B Day there and we had a blast. It is the perfect neighbor hood bar. I like it because it total unpretentious. I will continue to support Stables and all locally owned bars before I give the P & L one hard earned dollar of mine.

It always cracks me up when I walk by and see their daily lunch special. It's always something like chicken strips and includes green beans. When KC was free, the Stables used to be the smokiest place in town. The last time I walked in there I brought the average age down to 70 and quadrupled the number of teeth in the bar.

In short, the Stables is not for me. The KC Beer blog has a couple of posts about Stables, I'm too lazy to link them up but since I wrote one of them, my feelings are best represented there.

Bull is not an old guy, so he felt out of place

Hm that's an interesting reaction Bull. I used to work in the Scarritt Building next door and I actually liked Stables a lot. I mean, for what it is. They had a passable grilled cheese, decent fries as long as you told them to make them crispy, and an above average pork tenderloin sandwich. The bartender always called me sweetie too, which is a plus. There were always old guys at the bar drinking at 11 a.m. too.

So what gives?

The Stables is AWFUL. Whatever they charge for a drink is too much.
