Stephen Hale's biography lists his former occupations as a chimney sweep and an urchin diver (among other things). The Maine native also started brewing beer 30 years ago when he was 19. He put aside his other occupations when, as an assistant brewer, he helped launch Schalfly Beer in 1991. Aside from a short leave in the early '90s, Hale has been with the St. Louis company ever since, and is now the brewmaster.

He's made the trip across I-70 for a few days and will be at The Flying Saucer tonight showing offer six of the beers he's most proud of. To beer geeks they need no introduction -- the

tripel, grand cru, biere de garde, quadrupel, barrel-aged imperial

stout and oak-aged barleywine.

To the rest of us, Hale will explain the intricacies of the above beers (and possibly a surprise) while Flying Saucer provides appetizers and a dessert. The tasting begins at 7 p.m. and costs $35. To attend call  816-221-1900.
