Well, something happened, because Mandarinism is now closed: the phone is disconnected and it was shuttered on a Saturday night. This restaurant's closing will be a boon for the newly opened Tannah's (5041 W. 135th Street) across the street. Tannah's has good service and "Asian gourmet with an American Twist" -- their words, not mine -- that's actually very good.
And the fortune cookie finally crumbled for the 23-year-old Chili's in Westport, for the Brazilian-influenced Azul Latin Bistro at 1108 Grand and the Majestic Steakhouse at 931 Broadway. People either loved or hated the Majestic Steakhouse, but few local restaurants captured the feel of a 19th-century chophouse like it did.

I'm conflicted about the Majestic. I live about a 15 second walk from the front door but only visited 3 or 4 times. The jazz aspect was always fun, but the food and service were not what I expected for the prices they charged. I guess that's why I frequently drove 10-15 minutes when I wanted a steak instead of walking half a block.
Yeah, there's a "restaurant for lease" sign up and everything. For the atmosphere alone, the Majestic was a great place to visit. I regret not going there more when I worked a block away.
Ryan: That's exactly how I felt about the old Lamar's doughnut joint on Linwood. My world -- shattered.
Damn, I found Daniel's mysteriously locked during the day a few weeks back but hadn't heard that it actually closed. I thought it was rather good.
Oh and one of my great gastronomic regrets is never having been to the Majestic.
Wow... I can't believe that Chili's in Westport is going to be gone! I've never known it not to be there.
