Was it just two months ago that I made the winding and difficult journey to the Missouri River's edge to find the hot dog shack-at-the-end-of-the-world? I fell in love with former firefighter John Bruno's River Dogs, not only because the hot dogs were so good, but the location was so unusual.

Maybe too unusual. Thanks to the several savvy local food bloggers who reported the sad news first, I went to confirm the awful truth: River Dogs apparently barked up the wrong tree and is most definitely closed.

It was one of those summer flings, I guess....

God only knows what kind of volume one would have to do to make a profit from a hot dog shack. I should ask chef/author Lou Jane Temple. She tried to make one go, briefly, on Southwest Boulevard, back in the early 1990s.

It had new owners a week before it closed. It wouldn't be for the lack of business-they were packed for lunch
