Coffee commercials of yore

Posted by Owen Morris on Fri, Jul 17, 2009 at 11:30 AM

Slashfood has a round-up of classic coffee commercials from a simpler time in America's history, when Folger's showed women how to make their men a decent cup of coffee and Muppets had guns held to their head and were executed for not liking coffee:

For some reason coffee commercials seem to stay with the psyche more than other commercials and over the years I've put together a list of favorites that Slashfood somehow missed.

The one coffee commercial that's embedded itself more than any other is the Foldger's ad about the college student coming home for Christmas. Twenty years after it was made, I can still imagine this commercial running during the holidays.

Also, how could a round-up of vintage coffee commercials leave out everybody's favorite Colombian (Sorry, Shakira) Juan Valdez!

How Juan won the hearts of Americans is a mystery. He never did anything exciting in the commercials; he just picked beans.

But the best coffee commercials never ran in this country. Over a series of five years and six commercials, NesCafe Gold Blend fleshed out two characters who met, fell in love, fell out of love and almost cheated on each other, all while drinking Gold Blend coffee. The series became a mini-phenomena in Britain and started the then-unknown actor Anthony Head on the path to stardom.

Anyone remember the Coffee Achievers campaign, with NFL QB Ken Anderson watching game film with a nice hot cup of joe?
