Betty Crocker is about to get served. The next generation of cake competitions has arrived with the Threadcakes online cake competition. The second iteration of the competition asks bakers to transform T-shirt graphics into eye-opening cakes.
The contest is sponsored by Threadless -- a T-shirt company that lets consumers vote on which graphics entered (via an open submission process) should be printed on shirts. It's the T-shirt designer equivalent of getting a slot on open mic night, if you can bring five people to the show.
The rules of the competition are simple. Pick a T-shirt design on the
site. Then build either a two-dimensional or three-dimensional cake
based on that design. The mousetrap cake depicted at the beginning of the post was inspired by
the slightly '80s mouse graphic below.
With only 36 entries so far, this seems like a good weekend project. The grand prize nets you a year's subscription to the Threadless monthly T-shirt
club, a box of goodies from King Arthur Flour, Guittard Baking Chocolate and baking pans. Plus, a "surprise pack" from
Charm City Cakes (of the Food Network's Ace of Cakes fame) and, Epicurious says, an additional $500 in Threadless gift certificates.
to enter the competition. Entries are due by August 3. But don't just throw together an entry, or you'll risk blog infamy. Jen Yates, the author of Cake Wrecks --
a blog dedicated to acknowledging the most egregious occasion-cake
disasters -- is one of the judges, so you're guaranteed
to have your cake recognized in some way.
