The doors opened last Wednesday. The taps flowed on Friday. And the cicadas were singing by Sunday. Such is life in the beer garden at the Westside Local.
"This space is as much yours as it is mine," said proprietor Troy McEvers, who was operating on four hours sleep a night -- the result of trying to get the Westside Local up and running last week.
The menu is an easy mix of
localities (deviled eggs and pickles), larger plates (sheep's cheese
raveloni and braised rabbit saison), and seasonal produce -- peach
sorbet was being touted last Friday -- cheese plates and garlic fries.
"I just want to make
comfort food -- food that makes people feel welcome," said Executive
Chef Rick Martin, who left Free State Brewery after 17 years for the
chance to run his own kitchen.
The bar sits in a small enclave
between the dining room and the beer garden. It's fully stocked,
as evidenced by the Knob Creek, which is sadly becoming the liquor
equivalent of an endangered species.
like any beer garden worth the salt in its pilsner, it's what's on
tap that will keep customers coming back. McEvers said he will look to have a
rotating series of Belgian beers and plans to maintain a full lineup
from the Boulevard Brewery -- including Tank 7, which Fat City got to sample back in March.
The outdoor space is the Westside Local's biggest selling point. Five wooden tables stretch the expanse of the beer garden, encouraging visitors to strike up conversations with neighbors.

A - mazing!! We had dinner at Westside last night - a group of five. Service was fantastic and friendly. Food was incredible. And when we got the bill, we felt like we got more than we paid for! The olives they start you out with are soooo delicious. We ordered 2 appetizers (they call them snacks) - deviled eggs and the charcuterie plate. I particularly liked the braunschwiger; hadn't had that for years! Then we all ordered sandwiches and it was double thumbs up on everything! I've never had such a good chicken sandwich. Everything was unique and perfect. We'll all be back!
hi. i'm the owner, trying to keep a ship a float. come back in and i will buy you a drink if u tell me your issues. this is not easy and i'm sorry, tell me what i can do to make things right, thanks for the support
did not have a pleasant experience. almost exactly like smh said. owner seemed real uppity and cool for his own good.
I went on Friday evening. Our food was warmish/coldish, they forgot one of our entrees then found it, cold fries, credit card machine didn't work, we were charged for a bottle of wine we didn't purchase, nor consume. We waited over an hour for our food. There was a pregnant lady at the next table who arrived shortly after our table and 2.5 hours later had not received her entree. At least one table left before having any service.
Top that all off with no offer to comp any portion of our table's meal or an offer of any incentive to return. I thought the place was beautiful, but the service was inept and the owner did not seem particularly sympathetic or sincere when we responded to his inquiry about the quality of our meals. They also ran out of several beers.
Hopefully the kinks will get worked out!
I had a great grilled cheese sandwich and fries for $7not bad price for great food. My only complaint was the waitstaff didn't seem prepared for a busy Saturday night crowd. But overall, I enjoyed it and will be back.
We were just there on Saturday. Shared the charcuterie plate, I had the chicken sandwich, and my husband had the roast beef sandwich. Fantastic all around and we can't wait to go back.
