Toddy coffee comes to Waldo

The Coffee Girls has relocated from the Crossroads to Waldo, bringing toddy coffee and an updated menu to its new neighborhood.

The coffee shop, which opened two weeks ago, sits adjacent to Kennedy's Bar. Both venues have the attractive feature of sliding glass windows that can be opened when the weather is nice. Coffee Girls also has a wraparound patio.

What's toddy coffee?

It's a process of cold-brewing coffee, which reduces the acid and the

bitter flavor that can arise from pouring hot coffee over ice to cool

it. The low-tech system uses a plastic pitcher filled with water, a fabric filter and at least a pound of ground coffee.

After 12 hours (18 at Coffee Girls), the coffee concentrate offers a "really smooth, easy to drink," flavor, according to one barista. He's right: The iced coffee has a single rich flavor

with no metallic aftertaste. There's also no danger of being served an iced coffee that

looks like an iced tea because it's so heavily diluted by ice.

Those looking to treat themselves should order an iced coffee girl -- a

double shot of espresso mixed into a half-toddy, half-half-and-half

with a splash of vanilla. Once you're hooked, you'll want to know that toddy coffee is also

available at Latteland and is easy to make for homebrewers with a bit of time and a spare pitcher.

The shop hopes to make its mark with its breakfast menu, which

features a new sandwich -- the Egg Sammy ($5.50) -- an egg, ham and

cheese, with a side of fresh fruit. Another way to wake up might be the

Nojito ($5) -- essentially a Mojito without alcohol -- a blended drink

with orange juice, lime juice, mint, a sprinkle of raw sugar and a

little ice.

Fans of the sandwiches and wraps ($7) might

also notice two additions, the Debi (tomato, basil, mozzarella, red

onion, spinach, pesto mayo and balsamic on an asiago bun) and the Edith

(the Debi with herb cream cheese instead of mayo). A trio of spinach

salads ($6.50) and a kid's menu are now served as well.

The

Coffee Girls is now located at 7440 Washington. It's open 6:30 a.m. to

7 p.m Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 7:30

a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. You can call in orders at 816-221-2326.

This combines two of my favorites: toddy coffee and great architecture! It should be mentioned that this shop is in a new building in Waldo designed by El Dorado (who did seemingly half of the Crossroads as well). Power duo!

Toddy coffee can also be had at Room 39 -- either location.

Not to take anything away from Coffee Girls, but Toddy Coffee has already been in Waldo for a little while. One More Cup has been serving it, and serving it well, for several months:

With One More Cup, The Sweet Guy, and now Coffee Girls, the area around 75th and Wornall is quickly becoming the coffee shop mecca for Kansas City.
