The phone number for the restaurant, which Davis sold several years ago, has been "temporarily disconnected."
So, how temporary is temporary? The current owner of KC Masterpiece -- which once operated the Overland Park venue, a location on the Country Club Plaza and two restaurants in St. Louis, now all closed -- is a company called Restaurant Equity Venture. A partner in the firm, Blair Hurst, told the Star's Joyce Smith that a "new prototype KC Masterpiece" would open in Blue Springs.
This is the same Blair Hurst who told The Pitch, back in 2005, he was turning the Baja 600 Mexican restaurant on the Country Club Plaza into "an eclectic American Grill." That concept change never took place.
Baja 600, of course, is also temporarily closed and has been since late June, after a fire caused enough damage to have the Health Department order the restaurant closed. The message on the restaurant's answering machine informs callers that the restaurant will be re-opening this week. Maybe there will be jobs for all of those unemployed KC Masterpiece staffers.

this is why I stopped buying gift certificates years ago. the only exception would be to buy 2 $50 gift cards to JackStack at Costco for $80 and spend them the same day.
Pam, you might call Baja 600 and speak to one of the managers there. Since both KC Masterpiece and Baja 600 are owned by the same company, perhaps Baja 600 might honor that certificate. It's worth a phone call. Let me know what happens.
What happens if you have a gift certificate here? Is it any good?
This place and it's BBQ has been going down hill for years, and their menu offerings kept shrinking along with the portion sizes. Good riddance -- there are better places and much better BBQ to be had elsewhere.
Yes, it was last Thursday. As for not changing phone messages, Baja 600 isn't the only place with that issue (I'm guilty of it myself, by the way. There was a bakery that had a "we're on vacation" message playing months after the place closed. Maybe they meant they were taking a vacation from owning a bakery -- which would have been accurate.
Wouldn't the week of the 23rd be last week? They must not have changed over their phone message yet.
Thanks Jill. But the phone message still announced, as of this morning, that the restaurant was closed and re-opening "the week of the 23rd."
