The dining room, awash in dark wood and bright bold reds, seats 215 people. Figures posed in artistic photographs are actually RA servers from around the country.
(pronounced "rah," not raw or R.A.) is actually a chain owned by
Benihana -- the first of 25 restaurants nationwide opened 12 years ago
in Scottsdale, Arizona. In addition to being the first outpost in Kansas, RA will also serve as the room service option for the adjacent Aloft Hotel -- scheduled to open in September. The restaurant has a separate entrance for hotel guests.
RA is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The bar will be open
until 1 a.m. daily. Rohn is excited to make Sundays into a night
for the service industry -- advertising it as the Flying Fish Lounge --
where the music will be a bit louder, the lights a bit lower and the
atmosphere more relaxed over all. "We've got a good-looking, high-energy staff. That will be a chance to have some fun," says Rohn.
Happy hour runs from 3 p.m to 7
p.m., Monday through Saturday. Sushi is half-off and hot sake is $2.
"Every city is different. We're hoping to do maybe a signature Royals or Chiefs roll in the future -- something to represent Kansas City on the sushi menu," says Rohn.

"RA will be a destination point, a place to be seen."

I don't go to restaurants to be seen. And the people that do really don't wanna see me, so it's fair.
On the other hand, I am always looking for affordable sushi choices. I just usually prefer mine to be a little less hot spot, and a little more cool hideaway.
Regardless I am interested in hearing how it works out. I could probably swing by for happy hour after work if it's worth it.
I ate at Ra in Scottsdale and really liked it. It has the potential to be a douche magnet as they play the rock and roll real loud (at least they did 10 years ago) but the sushi was excellent.
Yay! I'm so excited to try this place! Bring on the sushi restaurants! (Why won't one open in the Village in P.V.? Why? I would open one myself, but my dad made me promise that I'd never invest in a restaurant, dammit. So now I'd feel all guilty and shit if I did. ::sigh:: )
At first I thought, *yawn* another high-falutin' JoCo showcase where people can "be seen", as the manager puts it.
But I have to give the concept of a 1/2 price sushi happy hour (until 7pm!) its due.
