A cool glass of beet beer

Let's all not get too crazy today. But since it's looking like a weird flavor day here -- it only seemed appropriate to wonder about the taste of beet-flavored beer.

The Local Beet looks at creating a home batch based off roasted beets. Besides a frighteningly red wort, the steps and ingredients would seem fairly standard to a home brewer.

Jim Reith of Empire Brewing in Syracuse, New York, also has a video of the process behind BEET Beer, which had a limited release of 12 kegs last month. Interestingly, he chose to finish the beer off with a bit of rosemary. Reith compares the batch to making pumpkin beer, which has come to be an accepted fall flavor.  

Magic Hat Brewery also offers the seasonal Wacko Beer, an English ale with a distinctive red color that counts beet sugar among its ingredients. This review suggests that, other than its color, it is just a nice, pleasant summer beer. (For

those not familiar, Magic Hat is a Vermont craft brewer, similar in

size to Boulevard. It's signature beer is Magic Hat #9 -- a pale amber

beer with amber extract -- a staple in the Northeast.)

Now if you're on the fence about the taste of beet beer, perhaps the potential health benefits might draw you to the tap. A study

just released by researchers at the University of Exeter suggests that

drinking beetroot juice may increase stamina and help a person exercise

for up to 16 percent longer.

If beetroot juice could be combined with Michelob Ultra, we would have a series of super drinkers athletes.
