Thanks to the very sweet comedy, Julie & Julia, the late Julia Child is finally at the top of the bestseller list, 48 years after Mastering the Art of French Cooking was first published. Have you seen the film yet? It's very endearing and Meryl Streep is amazing as the indominable Mrs. Child. The biggest laugh during the film, interestingly enough, was when the characters played by Amy Adams and Chris Messina watched this brilliant SNL sketch from 1978. It's amazing, but Dan Akroyd was nearly as good as Meryl Streep.Apparently the legendary Julia was not flattered by blogger Julie Powell's online homage: her editor said Julia considered the blog to be a stunt.
And speaking of stunts -- what else could you call this? -- KFC is launching a new sandwich, the Double Down, that uses two fried chicken fillets instead of bread and as "filling," bacon, two kinds of cheese and something called "Colonel's Sauce" that sounds vaguely...threatening.
On a much healthier note, A Blog Well Done wrote about the grilled eggplant panini sandwich created by chef Jasper Mirabile, Junior of Jasper's Restaurant.
Thanks to the intrepid authors of the Lunch Blog, we learned you can apparently eat both healthy and decadently fattening burritos at the new Burrito King in Lawrence, Kansas.
And on that note: apparently a very expensive burrito delivered to the hotel room of photographer Annie Leibovitz contributed to her current state of debt: $24 million in debt. No matter how you slice it, that's not a pretty picture.

I once made the mistake of getting tacos from Burrito King. They were like balls of grease in a grease envelope that got fried before being wrapped and given to me to eat. They were delicious, but I can't say I wasn't worried for my health for a good month after that. Thank goodness I was young, and my arteries bounced back! (One friend commented, "They call it 'Burrito King' for a reason...might wanna get the burrito next time.")
And if that story about Annie Leibovitz is true, it is fucking awesome! What a maroon. You'd think that everyone paid attention to the travesty that was M.C. Hammer, and learned accordingly. Oh well!
Burrito King has actually been open since the mid-90s, and it's wonderful. It was part of many an $8 night out: $2.50 pitcher and $0.25 9-ball at Astro's followed by a $3 enormous burrito at the King. Ah, nostalgia.
