New books, fresh pens and 8 a.m. classes give way to house parties, football games and afternoons off: It's back-to-school time. Here's a roundup of college taverns where you don't have to be a
student to get caught up in the something-new spirit.
• Free State Brewing Company (636 Massachusetts, 785-843-4555). Founded in 1989 as the first legal brewery in Kansas in more than 100 years, Free State offers eight to 10 specialty brews on tap. Monday is the night for the Mass Street revelry, with $1.75 draws.
• Replay Lounge (946 Massachusetts, 785-749-7676). This scenester hangout has been
selling cheap PBR for more than 15 years. Could anything in Lawrence inspire more unconditional love and loyalty? Only the $3 shots of Jim Beam.
• Louise's Downtown (1009 Massachusetts, 785-843-9032). Same wallet-friendly drinks but with an upstairs open late for a change of scenery.
