There are several restaurants in the family-owned Mi Ranchito mini-chain of full-service Mexican dining spots, but the Lenexa location received some major negative publicity this morning when local TV, radio and print news led with Sunday's incident at the Mi Ranchito restaurant on 95th Street: 22 patrons were taken to the hospital. The Star just reported, a few minutes ago, that the illnesses were caused by carbonic acid poisoning from faulty water lines connected to the carbonated drink lines.

Faith, you are absolutely correct. As someone who has had food poisoning over a dozen times (it's an occupational hazard sometimes), I know that it can take as long as 8 hours for symptoms to appear. So obviously the Mi Ranchito situation was something very different. The sad thing for the restaurant will be the inaccurate gossip about the place -- as in "Oh, isn't that where all those people got food poisoning?" -- that may linger forever.
I hate how misinformed the general public AND the media are when it comes to food poisoning. It had to be an environmental issue, like carbon monoxide, or something in order for people to get sick immediately like that. I was so frustrated reading the story updates on KMBC.com yesterday because they kept talking about it being food poisoning, even though the restaurant was saying it had to be something other than food related...they were being so finger-pointy and STUPID about it!
And so are their lawyers. The plumber who installed those contaminated water lines may get called on the carpet.
Wow. I knew it had to be something weird like that since people became sick so suddenly. And since it happened a few weeks ago too. I'll bet the owners are relieved that it's not the food.
